GALERIA MELISSA X JUNO CALYPSO
Galeria Melissa sits in Covent Garden and those who do not know about it would simply avoid it, walk past it as if it's just another shop. We, fortunately, have visited the place several times and therefore know the secrets it holds.
Their latest exhibition was created by Juno Calypso. Juno is photographer that started first by creating a series of portraits, under a fake name Joyce, and has since created a new series titled the Honeymoon. Joyce sees her photographing herself at her grandmothers house and others rented online posing as the fictional character, who is 'consumed by the labour of constructed femininity, carries out to the point of ritualised absurdity'. The Honeymoon series started when she spent a week alone at romantic-themed couples resorts in America. Juno posed as a travel writer and saw the different rooms as a stage to 'perform solo acts of desire and disappointment'.
This exhibition, titled 'The Salon', is an immersive art installation that explores rituals of beauty and self-improvement. It questions how far women will go within consumer society in order to achieve the ‘ideal beauty’. The eerie red light helps to highlight the horror of the environment. With neon lights changing from radiance to die, the eerie sculptured figures create an unsettling environment. However that being said, it’s worth going to take a look, the overall aesthetic although un nerving is however something valuable to consider living in the Instagram era.
